There is no doubt that we are in the midst of a large shift in the way that business is done. COVID-19 and its eventual aftermath will have reshaped many sectors of business, and changed some industries forever. It is important to note, however, that some aspects of the evolving workforce were on a growth trajectory long before there was talk of coronavirus. As of 2019, for instance, 35% of U.S. workers, or 57 million people, were engaging in some type of freelancing, up by 4 million since 2014, growing from a record low of 7% self employment in 1977.
In order to prepare for what is ahead, we need to create a more versatile workforce, that is flexible yet stable. Building resilience in our workforce will allow us to weather the years ahead, no matter what they bring. Doing so means taking a hard look at our existing assumptions about work and being open to doing things differently.
