Featured Moonlighter: Eddie Mitchell Shares His Story on Becoming a Freelance Cyclist Coach

This September, we had a great conversation with Boost member and freelance cyclist coach extraordinaire, Eddie Mitchell, to learn about some of his experiences as a freelancer. Eddie lives in Marshville, NC and offers stellar cyclist training. Through our conversation, I got to learn a bit about his freelancing journey.

How long have you been cycling?

I rose in the ranks very young, I raced in Europe: Italy, Belgium, France…all over the place. I came to the states 34 years ago and rode in a lot of races here, too. But I started getting too old to compete so I turned to training other cyclists and I’ve been training people ever since. I even trained Tony Doyle, the world 5000 meter pursuit champion who was very successful. I got into it here in the States, coaching (not top riders) but young riders who wanted to make an impression.

How did you get connected with Moonlighting?

I got an email from Moonlighting and the Charlotte Observer. It sounded interesting and I signed up for it, I think it’s great!

What do you think of freelancing as a career?

I’m all for it; I’ve always worked for myself. It’s the best way to go: you get to be more creative, and do things you wouldn’t think of doing if you were working for someone else.

Do you have any advice for aspiring and current freelancers?

Hang in there with it, it won’t happen overnight, although it does in some cases. But the majority of people have to work at it. Don’t get despondent, no matter what it is you’re doing, just hang in with it, because it’s worth it in the end—you have the freedom to do what you want and that’s amazing.

What are some of your favorite experiences you’ve had freelancing?

It’s always good when you get a phone call and someone says, “I’m interested in your program,” and you can tell them about the experiences you’ve had. I’m looking forward to using Moonlighting to get connected in that way.

What do you think about freelancing and the growing gig economy?

It’s a good time to freelance. I don’t care what people say—people are struggling still. If you’re on your own and you get out there and beat the bushes you can make things happen. I’ve always been a loner in the workplace but it gives you tremendous satisfaction when you can take somebody and do for them what they enjoy and like. In the end, loads of people say to you, “Thanks so much, we’ve enjoyed working with you.” The satisfaction is found not just in the actual business, it’s partaking in a lot of knowledge and giving that to others. Lots of knowledge in the world, and what I have, I like to pass it on.
