Winning Consistent Projects Freelancing

An inside story from Moonlighter Teleigha Peavy

All you need is one! That’s my response every time I speak with a fellow colleague wanting to start a business or become a freelancer.  They always state, “It seems to come easy for you to get more projects.” But actually, it didn’t.

When I got started, I was putting in twenty proposals a day and constantly promoting my services. After two weeks, I got my first break. A willing client was very considerate of giving me a chance. Of course it was based upon my experience and knowledge of a particular software, but it was my very first time working remotely for someone. I made it my mission and duty to do a good job for this client because I knew that this could lead to me to winning more projects. The client was so impressed he wrote me a great review and 5 star rating on the freelancing website. After that, it became a snowball effect. I was still putting in a lot of proposals but I had my resume, rating, and review to help me win the projects.

Now of course there will be hurdles or hiccups along the way. Everything is a challenge. Sometimes life will throw you a curveball, but that’s when you expect the unexpected. The number one trait clients look for in a service provider is dependability. There is so much technology out there where you can keep your client informed of any situation you may have. You also want to gain their trust and confidence in you that the work will be performed right. Even if it’s remotely, clients can hear that confidence in your voice.  As a freelancer or small business, you don’t just give correct work, but quality and outstanding work, sometimes you have to go above and beyond for clients. Their reviews really do matter.

You have to remain persistent and determined to keep getting projects, perform quality work, get reviews or references, and market your services. When I use Moonlighting to promote my services, I post my opportunities and then share them via, Twitter and Facebook. I then take the link and post it to Linkedin. Oh my gosh, the exposure and traffic I was getting!  I love to hear my phone chime from the Moonlighting App that someone saved my opportunity and liked it! Soon I started to get emails and calls about my services.

Since the snowball effect of projects after projects began, I’ve changed my mindset from self-employed to a small business owner. I legally formed my business in 2011 (even though I’ve been doing this since 2009) and developed processes and systems to manage and perform my work. There’s processes for marketing like posting opportunities two times a day on websites for service providers like Moonlighting, responding to bids, marketing services, and posting ads.  Once you start getting a lot of busy work, you will need management systems in place for organization, structure, and to effectively perform the required services.

So, start submitting proposals and bids, market your services, use freelancing websites like Moonlighting to get in more consistent clients! All you need is one good client and review! The rest will surely come!
